THE OBLIGATORY KINDERGARTEN YEAR

Attendance at kindergarten until 2 p.m. is free for children aged 4 - 6. For 5-year-olds, attendance is obligatory (Art. 26 of the Tyrolean Child Education and Care Law – TKKG 2010).

Obligatory kindergarten attendance applies to all children in the year prior to the beginning of official school age.
The kindergarten attendance requirement is 20 hours on at least four days per week with the exception of kindergarten-free days and holidays (Art. 26 para. 2 TKKG 2010).

For the obligatory kindergarten year, children can attend a public or a private kindergarten and can also be taught in pre-school groups as long as the basic educational goals of a kindergarten are met.

Exemptions from the obligatory kindergarten year:
Applications for an exemption must be submitted to the City Council Offices (Welfare Office for Children and Young People) by the child’s parent or guardian by the end of February (Art. 26 para. 3 TKKG 2010).
