What is the difference between school-based day care and an after-school club?

• School-based day care takes place directly at the child’s primary, special or secondary school. A lunch is provided. Educators ensure that children receive both educational support and a varied programme of leisure activities. There are two forms of day care: the integrated form ( where learning and leisure activities alternate throughout the day) and the separate form (traditional lessons in the morning and day care in the afternoon). Attendance at school-based day care counts as teaching time, so attendance is compulsory.
• After-school clubs are independent of schools. Supervision is provided not by teachers but by after-school club staff. In addition to lunch, the programme includes study sessions and leisure activities. There are both municipal and private after-school clubs.

In Innsbruck, there are 20 municipal primary schools, 9 secondary schools and 2 special schools offering school day care as well as 9 municipal after-school care centres where school children are looked after in the afternoons. School-based day care

There are two forms of school-based day care:

• Integrated model: All pupils in a class spend the whole day at school. Leisure activities and lessons alternate throughout the day. Under this model, school attendance is compulsory in the afternoons and the child remains at school for the entire afternoon. They cannot be looked after at home on individual days. Attendance is compulsory.
• Separate model: Lessons last until lunchtime. Pupils are looked after in the afternoon. Under this model, it is possible for a child to attend afternoon care only on certain weekdays. On the days for which they are registered, attendance is compulsory until the end of the care period.

The headteacher of the primary school, lower secondary school or special school your child attends is responsible for school-based day care.

The parental contribution and the lunch fee may be reduced if certain income thresholds are met. You can obtain the relevant forms from the respective centre and at Service Unit Afternoon care

Only complete applications can be considered . A new application must be submitted in September for each childcare or school year. Applications submitted during the year can only be considered from the following month onwards.

There are nine municipal and numerous private after-school clubs in Innsbruck. Any child attending a primary school can apply for a place at an after-school club.

Wie lange sind die städtischen Schülerhorte geöffnet?

Die städtischen Schülerhorte sind Montag bis Freitag von 11.00 bis 18.00 Uhr geöffnet.

Is there a lunch service in the municipal after-school care centers?

You can register your child for lunch in all municipal after-school care centers. Lunch costs 4.10 euros per meal. You must arrange this service yourself with the respective management.

A higher rate applies to children whose main place of residence is not in Innsbruck.

Enrolment: How do I enrol my child in the local after-school club?

Registration for the after-school care year takes place online via the FRIDA platform during the period
from 1 December 2026 to 31 January 2027. An ID Austria is required to use FRIDA.

Once you have completed the online registration via FRIDA, you will receive an invitation to a face-to-face enrolment appointment at the municipal centre.

What documents do I need for enrolment/registration?

• Birth certificate of the child and the legal guardian
• E-card of the child
• current registration form of the child and legal guardian
• current confirmation of employment of the legal guardian including hours worked
• Confirmation of household (for single parents)
• Parental leave notification (if applicable)
• Confirmation of German course or training (if available)

Rates, discounts & income limits for school daycare and municipal after-school care centres

How is it decided who gets a discount?

In addition to the full rate, there are three reduced rates. The amount of the monthly net family income serves as the basis for determining whether one of the three reduced rates is granted. The income limits for the respective tariffs are fixed.

The following income is used to calculate the monthly net family income:

• Net income according to wage or salary slip (less non-fixed allowances) or income tax assessment notice
• incoming maintenance and alimony payments
• Unemployment assistance
• Unemployment benefit
• Parental leave allowance
• Pension (incl. orphan's pension)
• Rent subsidy/housing subsidy
• Social assistance (according to notification)
• Income from letting and leasing

Special hardships can be deducted from the monthly net family income, such as

• alimony payments to be made
• Loan repayments (monthly repayments for the purchase or renovation of housing, but not personal loans for consumer goods)

The net family income does not include

• Family allowance
• Apprentice allowance
• Family bonus+
