INNSBRUCK MUNICIPAL MUSEUM

In its permanent exhibition based on the collections of the Municipal Archives, the Municipal Museum focuses on various aspects of the city’s history. Innsbruck’s characteristics and typical features are grouped under a number of headings such as location, foundation, princely residence, urban development, transport, health, the arts, sport, tourism, retail, business, drinking water supply and contemporary history. With the help of paintings by noted Tyrolean artists, old views of the city, historical photographs, rare realia, medieval documents, posters and postcards, the museum offers varied and informative insights into the life of the city and its inhabitants.

One section is devoted to Innsbruck during and following the Second World War.

For further study of the various topics, visitors can also make use of the reading room in the Municipal Archives. The close link between the museum and the archives is a special feature of the facility.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Municipal Museum also organises temporary exhibitions on various aspects of the city’s history.

The museum is fully equipped for public readings, presentations and events. Its rooms are also available for hire.

Current exhibition

History of the City of Innsbruck

The subject of the exhibition is the multifaceted history of the capital of the Tyrol. Starting with the 12/13th centuries, when Innsbruck received its city charter, a collection of diverse historical exhibits illustrates the city’s economic, political, religious and cultural development up to the 1976 Winter Olympics. The characteristic features of the city, including its geographic location, the choice of Innsbruck as the imperial residence, as well as religion and traditional customs combine in the exhibition to explains Innsbruck’s unique position among all the regional capitals of Austria.

Annual ticket for the municipal museums

Members enjoy the advantage of an annual ticket for admission to the Innsbruck Municipal Museum and the Golden Roof Museum.

To purchase the annual ticket, simply fill in the order form and send it by e-mail or fax to the Municipal Archives/Municipal Museum.
