For almost half a century – from his appointment as Music Director of Innsbruck in 1874 until his
his death – Josef Pembaur (1848–1923) played a defining role in the cultural life of his home town, Innsbruck.
Today, a street, a bridge, a student hall of residence and several other places in Innsbruck still bear his name. Despite his significance for Tyrolean musical life during his lifetime – as director of the Musikverein, composer, musician, music teacher, choir director and concert organiser – few people today know who Josef Pembaur actually was.
That is why, throughout the exhibition, we repeatedly ask the question: ‘Pembaur – who?’ in an attempt to shed light on the many facets of Pembaur’s wide-ranging body of work.
