As a photographer, discovering an unfamiliar environment and capturing those impressions and experiences in images is always both fascinating and challenging. […] Every city is a complex tapestry of architecture, history, art, consumer culture, infrastructure, and a blend of the extraordinary and the everyday – all of which could be captured in images. But for me, encountering a city means, above all, encountering its inhabitants. And so, in Innsbruck, I sought out people, crossed paths with them and was welcomed by them. Some of these encounters were chance meetings; in others, my interest in certain aspects of Innsbruck led me to them. My work does not claim to be exhaustive; the people I have portrayed do not represent an empirical cross-section of all the city’s inhabitants, yet each of them is a part of my subjective Innsbruck.
My very special thanks go to the many people of Innsbruck who accompanied and supported me during my stay.

As part of the 50th anniversary of the town twinning with Freiburg, a cultural exchange involving photographers took place. The idea was to send ‘young’ photographers to the twin towns for eight weeks; the selection was made by the respective cultural offices. In this context, Claudia Fritz from Innsbruck held an exhibition in Freiburg about Freiburg in 2013, and in 2015, the Freiburg-based photographer Nicolas Trusch held the exhibition ‘Encounters’ in Innsbruck about Innsbruck.
