Where are road closures due to avalanche danger?
The Avalanche Commission of the City of Innsbruck assesses the avalanche situation on the Innsbruck Nordkette every day from the first snowfall. If necessary, the City Department General security and events will initiate road closures due to avalanche danger in the hiking area. During the winter season, the avalanche warning service of the province of Tyrol continuously determines the risk potential for avalanches and issues corresponding information and warnings. Where are more roadblocks?
Handlhofweg road closure
From 30 March until 8 May 2026 , asphalting and work on power lines will be carried out on Handlhofweg. The area between the ÖBB subway and the Zenzenhof bridge (Sill) is closed to multi-lane vehicles. It is difficult to pass on foot or by bike. Restrictions will be kept to a minimum. Oberer Gang Weg between Lanser Steig and railway crossing
The Oberer Gang Weg between the Lanser Steig junction and the railway crossing is closed until 3 April due to logging work. Further information can be found in the following map:
Sillschlucht Severinisteig
Due to the construction of the new motorway bridge "Sillbrücke" by ASFINAG, the Severinisteig between Gärberbach and Sonnenburgerhof is completely closed until further notice. It is not possible to pass between Innsbruck and Gärberbach/Mutters. Please pay attention to the signposting and information on site. The northern part of the Sill Gorge is accessible via the Sill Gorge Trail. The Bergisel panorama trail is also open. Further information can be found in the following map:
Sillschlucht construction work on the Brenner Base Tunnel
In the area of the northern access to the Sill Gorge (from Innsbruck/Wilten), there are ongoing large-scale closures due to the construction work on the Brenner Base Tunnel. Please note the information on site.
The following routes are closed:
- from Bierstindl along the existing railway line
- from the Bretterkeller via the track into the Sill gorge
- from the lower Sill bridge downstream towards Innsbruck
