Endowment: 10,000 euros
The prize is endowed annually and can also be split by decision of the prize committee, for example into a main prize and a sponsorship prize. There is no obligation to award the prize every year.
What is sponsored?
The Marianne Barcal Prize has been awarded since 2016 for outstanding academic achievements in the field of 20th and 21st century history, preferably with a regional and/or gender focus, in the field of history and its neighbouring disciplines.
Marianne Elisabeth Barcal has bequeathed her entire estate to the municipality of Innsbruck, earmarked for the Service Unit City Archive/City Museum As the deceased was an enthusiastic student in the fields of contemporary history and political science, the municipality of Innsbruck has donated a prize from her estate. The aim is to honour the memory of the deceased and to strengthen the connection between the university and the city.
Who awards the prize?
The prize committee comprises the following persons or an authorised representative:
- Head of the Municipal Department V (Society, Culture and Housing) of the City of Innsbruck as chairperson
- Head of the City Archives/City Museum Innsbruck
- Head of the Institute for Contemporary History at the University of Innsbruck
- Head of the Institute of History and European Ethnology at the University of Innsbruck
How do I apply?
Submission was possible until 12 January 2025 and must be sent digitally to barcal-preis@uibk.ac.at.
Which documents are required?
- Thesis including expert opinion (dissertations) or detailed statement from the supervisor (diploma theses, master's theses)
- CV with a description of academic activities/research, including a list of publications
- Submission of other documents at the request of the prize committee
Who can submit?
The prize is intended in particular to promote young academics and is intended for theses (diploma theses, master's theses, dissertations) in history and political science and related subjects. Theses that were reviewed more than three years ago will not be considered.
Employees of Innsbruck City Council are not eligible to apply for the Marianne Barcal Prize.
What can be submitted?
Only theses (diploma theses, master's theses, dissertations) at the University of Innsbruck that were assessed no more than three years ago will be considered.
When is the next call for proposals?
The next call for proposals is expected to take place at the end of 2025.
