The history of Innsbruck in the early modern period is closely linked to the Habsburgs. They transformed Innsbruck from a medieval trading town into a prestigious royal capital. This development is particularly closely linked to Emperor Maximilian I (1459–1519) and Maria Theresa (1717–1780), as well as to the various princes of the Tyrolean line. Lasting traces of this can still be seen in the cityscape today: The Golden Roof, the Hofburg and the Triumphal Gate are just a few examples of this. But aristocratic palaces, inns and monasteries also bear witness to the city’s former status. Consequently, urban and architectural development forms a central focus of this volume. In addition, however, the authors also examine, from various perspectives, what life was like in Innsbruck during the early modern period. In this way, the splendour and misery of a royal capital are brought to life.
