Volume 3 of the four-volume collective biographical work is dedicated to the war year 1917, which was of particular regional significance. A new feature of the air war on the Austro-Hungarian side was the formation of air fighter companies, which had to fight an increasingly hopeless battle against the superior Italian and Allied air forces on the Tyrolean front. The threat to South Tyrol from Italian bombing raids also increased noticeably in the course of 1917, which is why air defense measures were taken in the larger cities and finally a military air defense service for Tyrol and Vorarlberg was established with a command in Innsbruck. The core of this volume is again formed by numerous biographical sketches of pilots, observation officers and balloonists in the service of the Imperial and Royal Air Force. These are accompanied by two introductory articles and a chronicle of the air war events of 1917.
