Opening ceremony of the redesigned DDr. Alois Lugger Square© Stadt Innsbruck/FB
DDr.-Alois-Lugger-Platz was transformed into a climate-friendly, attractive and safe meeting place with the involvement of the local population, local associations and institutions. Supported by the Climate and Energy Fund, representatives of the City of Innsbruck, IIG, ISD-Stadtteilarbeit and the University of Innsbruck worked on the COOLYMP project, accompanied by ARGE IB Laup | Machné&Glanzl Architekten. The population took centre stage: all residents of the Olympic Village were invited to contribute their ideas to give the square a new shape.
The success of the redesign is reflected in the high visitor frequency. But: where people come together and children play, it gets loud. And so, even after the official completion in summer 2025, further adjustments were made to improve interaction at this central meeting point for everyone. to ensure that the residents of the neighbouring houses can enjoy some well-earned peace and quiet, the use of the square has been restricted and cycling, scooter riding and ball games are no longer possible. The water feature will be switched off at 8 p.m. and the City of Innsbruck's Mobile Monitoring Group (MÜG) will increase its presence on the square to ensure that parking regulations and night-time peace are respected. At the same time, the facilities of the ISD district and youth centre will be expanded and a separate toilet facility installed. Ongoing scientific monitoring by the Leopold Franzens University is intended to ensure that both the temperature-reducing measures on site and the social interaction on the square continue to ensure "cool heads".
