SILVER SURFERS

Young helpers for older Internet users

This intergenerational project was launched in Innsbruck in 2005 and is still as popular as ever. Pupils from Innsbruck’s New Middle Schools meet up with senior citizens to teach them the facts of computer life. The youngsters first draw up a programme for their target group with the help of their IT teachers before spending three afternoons doing the coaching. Each coaching session involves one pupil teaching one senior citizen. The result is a two-way transfer: Technical know-how flows from the pupils to the senior citizens, and a lifetime of experience passes from the older generation to the young. There have been many cases where the afternoon coaching has not been the end of these cross-generational contacts.

If you are interested in learning to use the Internet, please contact the Women’s Advancement, Family and Senior Citizens Service.
