INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

November 25 – designated International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women by the United Nations – has been marked as a day to fight violence against women since 1981 and is now celebrated as a day of action and remembrance worldwide. The date derives from the terrible fate of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered after months of persecution and torture in 1960.

Violence against women and children has many aspects in all social groups, with subtler forms of violence now on the increase in our society. In order to build pubic awareness for the problem, the "Live in Freedom - without Violence" flag is hoisted on the Town Hall every year in collaboration with various women’s rights organisations
