Cultural Projects

The “Innsbruck is Reading” project (“Innsbruck liest”) was established in 2004. The concept is as simple as it is effective: 10,000x literature – financed by sponsors – is given away to the people of Innsbruck.

The general objective of the project is to make literature the subject of discussion and encourage people to read, whatever their age or educational background. The campaign is run in cooperation with local literary institutions and promoters of literary events.

The annual edition of “Innsbruck is Reading” is kept under wraps until the launch event in the ORF on the eve of the official distribution of the book.

Criteria for the choice of book

Readability plus literary merit, attractive for a wide audience

Capable of triggering a literary discussion

Written by a living author from the German-speaking area

Either a literary debut or a book that has not received the attention it deserves

Selection process

Every year a different jury, comprising three members, selects the most suitable book. Each member suggests five books, making a total of fifteen new publications. The jury members study all fifteen books and then come together for a jury session chaired by a literary scientist to select that year’s “Innsbruck is Reading” book.
